Online dating can be exciting; new matches, fun conversations, and the possibility of meeting someone special.
But while dating apps can be a great way to connect, they also come with risks you shouldn’t ignore.
Whether you’re brand new to dating apps or you’ve been swiping for years, here are some practical tips to help you stay safe while online dating.
Never share your home address, workplace, or other identifying details too early.
Use the app’s chat function instead of giving out your phone number or social media until you feel comfortable.
It’s okay to Google someone, check their LinkedIn, or verify that their social media presence seems real.
If something feels “off” — trust your gut and take a step back.
Choose a busy, well-lit place for your first date, like a coffee shop, bar, or public event.
Always let a friend or family member know where you’ll be and who you’re meeting.
Now that the date is organised, make sure you tell someone when and where your going and who your supposed to meet. Plan a Code-word you can text them to say it's going well or if it's not and they can ring you to get you out of there with a phone call.
And make sure you tell them when you're back home safely. You don't want them to worry all night.
Don't forget you if you are at an event, date or generally out and about you can always "ask for Angela" at the venue who's staff should know what to do and how to help you.
Pay attention to behaviours such as:
Don’t let anyone rush you into meeting, sharing personal information, or escalating intimacy.
Genuine connections develop at a pace that feels comfortable for both people.
If something feels wrong, even if you can’t explain why, it’s okay to end communication.
You never owe someone your time, attention, or an explanation if you don’t feel safe.
